I’ve been looking to be able to code a bit of RoR while on the go. From a few devices which I have, N810 has the longest battery run time.
So… Google gave me a nice How To from Jon Forrent, it talks about N800 but it’s the same.
I was trying to do all the steps but I just managed to install ruby and sqlite3 packages. After that Gems package installed well but it wasn’t too useful, any attempt at
gem install
or
gem update
nothing worked, left it over the night, nothing happen.
So…
Uninstalled the gem package, downloaded Real Ruby Gems in a zip file ( you will need the unzip package ).
Unzipped the file, went inside the directory. then:
ruby setup.rb --no-ri --no-rdoc
wow it installed something, now doing :
gem update
told me nothing requires update, great, now lets go with rails:
gem install rails
Amazing, installed really quick ( I would recommend not installing the ri and rdoc as well here )
Just created some test rails app and it works!
Now it’s time to find a decent text editor for it and client for Mercurial.
Two weeks ago I have got my Nokia n810 a Garnet OS install. I did it just because it enabled me to used the Mobipocket Reader ( for Palm OS ). It works, just the fonts are bit dull.
Now, to celebrate my toys functionality, I’ve bought some Sci-Fi book, which had a reduced price and good ratings.
That book turned out to be a real page turner, I couldn’t believe that books can still have that influence on me.
I even got a sequel strait away after finishing the first one. Man, that was a great journey.
Now, I’m resisting. There is a third part of the series, but I’m keeping my hands away from the mobipocket website. I will keep it for the flight over the pond. It’s 10 days to go and I can’t wait!
Books which I was talking about are writen by Randolph Lalonde, looks like I will read all his books.
Mobipocket is my ebook format of choice. Donno why but it is.
I have recently moved from Stratford to Poplar.
Maan, how I dislike all that packing up and even more – unpacking.
Now, I have a bit smaller place but better in overall terms.
The only think which I am missing is a place to store my rubbish gadgets. After some consultation with my tribe I will probably go for something like a mechanics tool cabinet Clarke CTC 500 , unfortunately higher models are obscenely expensive!
I’ve picked up a Wii Fit a few days ago in Amsterdam ( while en route to LCY ). And I love it! It’s great fun and work out. Brilliant product.
After replacing damned dell keyboard with something usable, I had real urge to replace the mouse as well. I’ve got used to Logitech Marble Trackball and MX900 mouse ergonomic designs, so standard mouse was actually putting a lot of pain in my wrist.
It looks like symmetric mice just don’t work with my wrist any more.
As I like to play a good game from time to time, I have started to look for some nice gaming mouse. “Once goats death(die) ” I had a look at Logitech G9 and G5 – they didn’t really convinced me. Brief look at Microsoft range, caught my eye on the mouse which they made in cooperation with Razer, it was really good on my wrist but kind of old now.
I have decided that I want a Razer mouse. At that point I was really struggling. There was no shop on Tottenham Court Road which had any Razers. I had to decide with knowledge based on reviews read on the Internet. DAMN! For some time I was convinced that Lachesis would be the best mouse for me. But reading reviews pushed me away, it was apparently a very good high spec mouse, but unfortunately – symmetric design. So I had to resort to a lower model and DeathAdder started to grow on me.
Now I just love that mouse. It’s great performance, slides like on butter. Fits my palm perfectly, no strain on my wrist. Even side buttons just work! under Gnome and FIrefox. This is brilliant, as I have previously spent hours to get MX900 up with all its buttons.
Oh and I thought that the lights on the mouse are going to be annoying. Fortunately, they are not. Maybe because I have the Guild Wars edition, which has orange instead of blue lights, this is acceptable.
Didn’t intended to do any shopping today, but I ended up buying a few things.
Headphones from Sennheiser , the HD 415 which are replacing my ancient Phillips HP140. This is because old ones started to leave pieces of some black coating on my head … and they were shit from the beginning. HD 415 didn’t break the bank and still feel and sound good.
Another item on the list is Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000. Since I have started to use my desktop not only for gaming, I was really hating the standard Dell Keyboard, which it was delivered with – feel on the keys is just plain wrong and many times you have to use a lot of force to push a key down. I have some wireless Belkin keyboard, but it is shit as well – eats(doesn’t transmit) letters and doesn’t have the responsiveness. So, now I have a nice low profile MS keyboard, I am still getting used to curved line of keys. The new keyboard has some multimedia keys present, I have been successful to map couple of them to the right functionality. But I still have problems with getting Back and Forward to actually work in FF – they have their own key codes so it is not Just Works (c) like with IBM keyboards ( they map them as alt+left and alt+right ). Also Banshee is refusing to react to Play/Pause button mapping.
I have finally bought a remote controlled mains socket switch. It’s just 5 quid and saves me diving behind a sofa to switch off my kit for the night. Yes, I have started to switch off all my equipment at the wall socket, this crap is using about 55W while on standby!!!!
For very long time I am contemplating to buy an ebook, usually they were extremely expensive ( the eRex ) or didn’t had the MobiPocket® read functionality – Sony ( as I have a collection of ebook in that format I would love to be able to read them on the ebook reader, not only my phone ) Finally Gizmodo is reporting :

price is decent in States $350 what translates to £170 real money … while the UK shop asks for £250 !!!! That is insane. I would order from States for delivery over the pond by a little mule but his holidays are not in mid December( estimate delivery time as they have high demand ) so he would be able to pickup the package.
For now, Bookeen you are loosing $350 as I am not going to buy it for your ridiculous $500 price in Britain. Unless something happens and I’ll end up in NYC in mid-late December.
I am about to change my E61 for something new. I am looking for something what will not be only new but will has more features as well.
So far I have found that :
Palm is thinking that Europe loves only Windows Mobile – I don’t! The two of the latest Treos are not showing in EU – these are 755p and Centro. HEY! I want one of these ( actually two! )
Nokia: E61i would be on my list but it does not feature A2DP what is stupid! E90 has all the features I desire, plus it has a [tab] key on internal keyboard! That is cool, if you are going to use it for SSH like I have to. Problem with E90 is price…. probably way over my limit will see when buying time will come.
Sony-Ericsson has a new P1i which honestly is at the top of my list, it has all what I am looking for and a bonus – Jog-Dial which I alway wished to have in a handheld.
Others ? They are doing Windows Mobile only what makes it not for me.
Maybe you know some gear which has a querty keyboard, wifi/bluetooth(2), voip, 3G, no windows mobile?
After years of consideration I have acquired a Bluetooth HeadSet – finally something what doesn’t screen rob me.
Sound quality is decent! There is one but – outdoor, music source has to really close to your headset , there is shit loads of interferences out the in world. Indoors is perfect, I can roam around whole flat without loosing signal.
I have hooked it up to my E61 which does not do stereo and it shit ( good it’s my last month of a contract ) .
I have hooked it up to my Music Player the StormBlue A9+ which I had for a while and until yesterday I was disappointed with it – now I love it, it works with my headset perfectly.
I have also connected it to my computer at home and now I am about to connect it at home. It’s dirt easy – thanks to Audio Devices How To from BlueZ
btw headset is Motorola S9
It is time to get some nice break on Tenerife Island , it is much needed after working my ass off.
Gonna see my parents there.
