Some more

January 18th, 2009 1 comment

All that festive time is gone. Finally. Craze at work is also stabilizing.

Some more of Randolph Lalonde

I’ve bought the FirstLight – Omnibus and as Spinwardfringe, it kept me glued to the screen. I really like your work, keep them coming! You can get Freeground on Amazon now.

Some more of coding

I am currently writing brand new munin plugin for Bind using stats output. I had some experience with plotting bind but none of the old ones works with my system so I am writing my own.

Some more cursing

Backup Exec and Windows server – why this shit doesn’t want to backup local resources ?!

back to Americas Army and some CIsco ASA install

March 25th, 2008 Comments off

I’ve spent most of the long weekend playing games and working.

Finally, after around 4 years of having the AA Account ( AAA :) I’ve finished Special Forces training! This gave me access to some neat weaponry in the game. Also unlocked SF exclusive deployments. Most of the time i was playing SF Hospital, but now SF Snakeplains is my favourite. The only training which I didn’t finish is for becoming a Medic.

I have also lost about 1.5 days over the weekend replacing old Monowall FIrewall with a state of art CIsco ASA 5510 Security Plus. I have some suspicion that current SysOp has a bug in regard to Port Speed. When, you boot the box, ports, which are connected to gigabit start, to glow orange, as they should to indicate 1Gbps connection, but after the system has finished booting, they are back to green, telling me that they are 100Mbps. After disconnecting and connecting back the cables, they are back to orange .. 1Gbps.

Oh, also replacing the firewall and extended period of time of dis-connectivity caused Windows 2003 DNS server on AD controller to crash in a way that it wasn’t serving any queries any more… that is MS for you.

Tape Backup Solutions

February 3rd, 2008 Comments off

My current arrangement for backup is Dell PowerVault 122T SDLT and Backup Exec 10 on Windows 2000 Server, at least at one place.

The only thing which I can say about it is … unreliable.

Tape library has mechanical problems, build in tape drive has tape errors more often than 3 girls combined periods. And it’s apparently almost brand new, in 3 years history, it was replaced twice, last time 3 months ago …

Backup software looses it’s agents or communication with media part of it’s self at least once a week.

The best part is that we do not change much, backup schedules and selections changed maybe 2 times in 3 years. Tape drive always gets good tapes and a new set every month. So it should just work … but is doesn’t.

I’ve even tried to use it with a HP D2D Virtual Tape library, but sodding software does not handle iSCSI well enough to actually make it usable.

Why someone can’t make a solution which just works and works and works for years, why it has to become shit after so short period of time ?

I wrote about it because I had to spend 2h, yesterday, trying to get this shit to run.

Smart phones

I am about to change my E61 for something new. I am looking for something what will not be only new but will has more features as well.

So far I have found that :

Palm is thinking that Europe loves only Windows Mobile – I don’t! The two of the latest Treos are not showing in EU – these are 755p and Centro. HEY! I want one of these ( actually two! )

Nokia: E61i would be on my list but it does not feature A2DP what is stupid! E90 has all the features I desire, plus it has a [tab] key on internal keyboard! That is cool,  if you are going to use it for SSH like I have to.  Problem with E90 is price…. probably way over my limit will see when buying time will come.

Sony-Ericsson  has a new P1i which honestly is at the top of my list, it has all what I am looking for and a bonus – Jog-Dial which I alway wished to have in a handheld.

Others ? They are doing Windows Mobile only what makes it not for me.

Maybe you know some gear which has a querty keyboard, wifi/bluetooth(2), voip, 3G, no windows mobile?

Just a gaming PC

September 10th, 2007 Comments off

Bought a PC, for gaming.

Yap, a Dell Vostro 200. I’m running MS Vista and playing games on it.

It will have Linux in about a month, when I will get bored of games for next 5 years.

So far, I am enjoying the world of computing where legitimate users have more trouble running their legitimate software and media copies.

How people can accept this kind of obstructions ?!

BTW, I have bought it using my vacation budget, it is a sort of travel in to another world, for a month, instead of  really traveling over the weekend ( same budget ).

Outlook and clueless messages

January 29th, 2007 Comments off

I love when software is giving you a message which tells nothing except to contact administrator … and what administrator gets from the msg ? nothing, just a memo to contact himself …  crap.

My solution to :   “Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact
your administrator if this condition persists.”

Is : Rename||copy PST file and get outlook to point to new location. ( Oh and I also have removed shitty Nokia PC Suite from users machine ).

SVN and Solaris 10

December 15th, 2006 Comments off

One word: Nightmare!

How on Earth, can I install SVN/Subversion on that bloody operating system , so it will include bindings for either Perl or Ruby ?! fighting with it for last two days… finally got source to at least compile  … but even if I have Ruby ( from CSW ) and Perl ( by Sun ) I just can’t get binding for them …

Why it can’t just work… like on Linux distributions ( Ubuntu/Gentoo , you name it … ) …

The other thing, this Solaris is running inside Microsoft Virtual Server… on a decent machine … but it is slow like Dell PE2400 which I use for concept testing … and no, VS machine is not taken over by other VM …

SVN auto publishing to Windows servers

November 10th, 2006 Comments off

I need to setup a system which uses SVN for storing ‘website’ revisions and automatically updates live/review/development systems whenever there is commit. Adding a little bit of complication each server is updated from different branch.

If website serving boxes would be any kind of UNIX, this post would not exist… way too easy.

Web servers are Windows boxes  and they are located in different networks, so no SAMBA.

My ideas so far :

Naturally using hooks in repository…

  1. Using rsync
This idea was to : whenever content of a branch is changed, branch is exported locally on SVN server, rsync it to Web server.
  2. Using FTP
similar to rsync , instead of using rsync for file transport we would use FTP
  3. Using SVN+HTTP
Here it gets lil bit more complicated ,  after branch changed, svn server sends HTTP request to web server, which fires svn up .

Each of an ideas has its minuses, 1 uses precious svn server disk space for second copy, requires web servers to run rsync servers. 2 uses disk space on svn and abuses a lot of bandwidth every time when something changes. 3 requires web servers to have svn clients installed and custom CGI/ASP/Whatever which will trigger svn updates on local copies.

There is one more, using scripting language to write FTP/SVN integration : something like ftp client which instead of uploading from File System it would upload from SVN … that looks good! will have to research on which tools I can use to do that! :)

In Absence of Console Cable , N770 strikes back!

July 5th, 2006 Comments off

Today, I was planing on playing more with my new router, unfortunately I have no console cable ( will arrive tomorrow ) and I was not hardcore enough to upgrade IOS on it.

I ended up installing new OS on my Nokia 770 , the 2006 edition. I have not used it for a while and I have not looked in to software repositories for it, for very very long time. Read more…

Debian Packages

April 10th, 2005 Comments off

I just simply hate DPKG It is so f*cking stupid. Dependency in this system is a hell which if you use pkg from different source might just make you cry.

Other things : finished whole Sex and the city , and whole weekend I’m having a head-ace, which sux.

Got ati-drivers working on my Linux , plus got Unreal Tournament 2004 demo without artifacts. UT is a little bit slower, and less stable than Windows® version, but it works, only weapon change sometimes hangs game for a second.
